Voyeurs
Egg tempera on gesso panel, 18 x 24"
$4,000 (prints for $125 and $250)

Inspiration for Voyeurs came from multiple sources. One day when drawing AJ (this model) in a life drawing session, I was struck by how much his face resembled a Celtic warrior. Another day, while painting, I was listening to a book by C. J. Box that featured a falconer and an image of AJ as a falconer popped into my head. I researched falcons and found out that our local landfill employs a falconer to keep gulls and other critters away. Before I organized a photo session at the dump, I recalled an annual birding event sponsored the American Littoral Society (former employer) and other nonprofits. Raptorama, provides an opportunity for the public to get up close and personal with rehabilitated raptors. I drove up to Brooklyn and stood out in the rain to get closeup shots of a variety of raptors, including the peregrine falcon featured here. (Note the birds were all cozy in a tent!) As I began sketching, both the narrative and the composition demanded more complexity, so I added the two voyeurs. For me, making art is always a journey.
