Voyeurs
Silverpoint on Panel, 18 x 24"
$2,000
As covered in the notes on the egg tempera page, there were many sources of inspiration for Voyeurs. However, in addition to those inspirations, there is always a layer of formal "problems" to resolve. Many people ask why I spend the time to make these detailed drawings before I paint. First, I simply love to draw. Second, I have no single image source for these works -- they come from some combination of things drawn from life, things photographed, and things imagined. Thus, when I make the silverpoint drawings, I am creating the framework for the entire ecosystem -- all of the elements are brought together into one world. I need to make sure the light source is consistent and that the values and textures work together. It is like solving a puzzle. In this drawing, I set myself the problem of having the entire background consist of complex shapes, values and patterns (all of those leaves) while ensuring that these patterns remained subordinate to the foreground figures - the man and the falcon. It is always a balancing act.
