These paintings explore notions of separation, imprisonment and self-imprisonment. In some paintings, the artist worked from a replica of a Victorian fire screen. The influence of Medieval illuminated manuscripts is apparent as she weaves flowers and birds into the screens. The Medieval influence increases in paintings such as In-Out and In the House of Martha and Mary, in which Kennedy used the foliate motifs from 15th Century illuminated manuscripts as models for the screens.
