A Meditation on the Stations of the Cross

This project is an expression of the artist's faith and love of the traditional forms embraced by artists throughout the ages. The 28 paintings and drawings were created over a period of five years and are based on the Christian visual narrative tradition known as the Stations of the Cross, which chronicle the final hours of the life of Christ.

The artist began with a series of black and white photographs of family and friends who posed for the characters in the narrative. From these she created numerous rough sketches in charcoal and a skematic "map" of the finished piece. Next, Kennedy rendered a finished drawing in prismacolor pencil of each station. Once all 14 drawings were complete, she created the 14 grisaille underpaintings shown at the bottom of this page using grays created from ivory black, yellow ochre, and titanium white oil paint. These were painted one at a time on an easel in her studio. When these were complete, she hung them in rows on her studio walls and applied color glazes using Windsor and Newton "Liquin" medium, working on all of the paintings at once. This enabled the artist to ensure consistency of flesh and hair tones throughout the piece. To assemble the piece in its final cruciform arrangement, she screwed wooden frames together in two groups of 4 and 1 group of 6 so the piece could be hung in 3 segments.

This work is currently on view at Trinity Church, in Red Bank, New Jersey.
